Koekela Huiskafee in Westdene, Bloemfontein is a place where you are ALWAYS made to feel welcome – it is a “'n Huiskafee wat dit ongelooflik belangrik ag om 'n spesiale plek in jou hart te word”, in their own words. The chefs of this unique café are passionate and innovative in their menu planning and preparation. They are known for combining and transforming raw fresh ingredients into culinary delights with a little ‘something different’.
The main food menu includes a comprehensive breakfast selection, triple decker toasted sarmies, homemade quiches and pies (include the famous bacon, blue cheese and green fig quiche and the proudly South African bobotie pie), gourmet burgers, wraps and salads. The main attraction at Koekelas, however, are their sumptuous ‘nice to look at and even nicer to eat’ cakes and desserts. Koekela’s famous caramel centred cupcakes, custard biscuit boats, koeksisters dipped in white chocolate, cake pops, Ouma se melktert and marshmallow and pineapple fridge tart are just some of the amazing indulgences to tempt your taste-buds.
Koekela also offers a catering service - just drop off your own bowls or plates and they will cook up a feast for you. The restaurant itself has an eclectic style of décor, with a vintage mix and match and ‘Alice in wonderland’ feel. The ambience is laid back and charmingly quaint. Koekela Huiskafee also has a small art gallery where South African artists such as Marcia van der Merwe exhibit their exclusive works.
Koekela hosts private functions on request and specialise in kitchen teas, baby showers, christenings and themed events. Every once in a while the café plays host to garden concerts. The garden looks out onto a small pond and makes for a great venue to take kids for a day’s outing.
