When walking into Durban’s new Hotspot, Robson’s On Point……you would think you are walking into some kitted out warehouse in San Francisco, with its exposed raw brick, high ceilings, exposed rafters and raw wood furniture…..oh and don’t forget the massive 6000L tanks behind glass where the Stewart family store their secrets…..the golden nectar!!!!

The brand Robson Real Beer is synonymous with the craft movement that is taking over the world and South Africa. With all their accolades and awards that their beers have won locally and internationally, they thought “well let’s give the restaurant industry a go while we at it!!!!”

From their humble beginnings of putting the brewery on their Mom’s duck farm up in Shongweni, basically just dumping the equipment on the front porch, to a fully-fledged brew pub, “we needed a retail presence, we needed to grow the brand and interact with our clients on a more level” says part-owner Donn Stewart, “literally bringing the beer to the people”

Their journey of starting their own brew pub began over 2 years ago, with lots of planning, 18 hour days and a lot of work put into licensing their venue, they finally got it right and launched Robsons On Point in September 2016. Now a lot of people might ask why the Point area, isn’t it dodgy down there??? But listening to Donn for a few minutes it becomes clear why the point waterfront was the right decision and the perfect location.

First and foremost a brewery needs a lot of space, that means we needed a reasonable rental but with a retail presence which can also appeal to the tourist and local industry. The point becomes a destination venue within a city, people come here for a few hours to take in the experience. Just like people will get in their cars on a Sunday and drive out to the Midlands to go visit other such brew pubs, we now have one on your doorstep. The point area was also voted the Safest suburb in SA in 2015, boasting over 58 cameras in the area which is under constant surveillance and run by private security, it puts your mind at ease when parking your car on the road, by the way there’s lots of parking. The area is also destined for huge improvements which have already begun, with rumours of a passenger terminal for passing passenger liners to be constructed right in front of Robson’s on Point in the next few years!!!

So what’s the fuss all about??? Other than the food being unbelievable, the gargantuan hamburgers to the sticky jalapeño ribs to duck spring rolls (Sourced directly from their Mom, which by the way are fed with the spent grain from the brewery) and not only do you get to wash this down with the freshest of craft beer (choices do vary according to stock) but the service is definitely one of the best in Durban, which you would not expect from a brew pub.

All in all I can see why Robson’s On Point is the place to hang out and chill with a couple cold brews and a couple good Bru’s on your side to experience it with. Not only do they run brewery tours with the brew master himself, father Brian Stewart on Saturdays and Sundays, but they also have a fully licensed liquor store which means you can buy your favourite brew and take it home with you!!!!
