Built in 1713, the iconic Coopmanhuijs at 33 Church Street underwent painstaking renovation before opening as a five star boutique hotel and spa in 2010. Since then, it has consistently ranked #1 on www.tripadvisor.com among hotels in Stellenbosch.
Helena's Restaurant is housed in two areas within the hotel: The first is the spectacular dining-room, adorned with richly embossed French wallpaper and trees made of wire. The second is a glass-roofed conservatoire, furnished with hand-hewn poplar wood chairs, and decorated with artisanal tiles by Ruan Hoffmann and plates by Gerrit Oosthuizen.
The aim of Helena's Restaurant is to serve heritage food with finesse, often with a subtle twist in the detail, thus turning the familiar into the spectacular.
The menu is designed to reflect the fresh produce of the Boland, with specific emphasis on freshness and food provenance – the "from where" and "by whom" of locally sourced (often artisanal) ingredients.
To complement the new restaurant, the European-style Tonga Door wine lounge at Coopmanhuijs offers some of the finest local wines.
