Chilli con pesco? Not an obvious mix you might think, but it's the kind of variation on a theme you might have come to expect to find on the culinary palette of Solly and Jane Solomon's, refreshingly-casual seafood restaurant in uptown Cape Town, Miller's Thumb.

Not that you would necessarily find this item on their ever-changing chalkboard menu: the whole point is that they enjoy the freedom of being able to constantly come up with new ideas, which means that the customer, though reasonably assured of always finding something familiar, will just as surely find a couple of unlikely options.




The deep orange and green hues of the three interleading rooms are offset by tapes of Solly's favourite sixties music, lending a distinctive air to this different seafood venue. While Helen Shapiro walks back to the happiness unobtrusively in the background, indulge in superbly-prepared mussels, calamari (Solly is a wizard with these, which are best served grilled and reletively unadorned, with just the gentle charred flavour to enhance the tender meat), prawns and linefish.

Solly's fishy version of chilli con carne was a delight with it's dark red beans adding colour and textural contrast to delicately-cooked linefish, prawns and squid.




Cajun and Creole dishes have their influence in this kitchen, as does a winning Japanese dish which must be tried at least once. "Yaki Soba",
a noodle dish with prawns, chicken and cashews, which has become
a staple.

There's generally a pasta dish or two on the menu with interesting sauces, complemented by a good choice of wines.

In fact, the restaurant has a full, attractive bar for pre-prandials or for that matter, an evening of casual sipping and entertaining conversation.
But chances are the aromas will entice you into one of the other rooms before long!
